HINGHAM – The issues are obvious. There’s not enough stands around the rink, the PA system is subpar on its best day, but at least it’s better than the spotty Wi-Fi reception. That’s all true. But when a Hingham High hockey player walks down the steps from the home locker room to the ice surface at the Pilgrim Skating Arena none of those things matter as they immediately become 10-feet tall and bulletproof.
FALMOUTH — Selecting the Buddy Ferreira Classic MVP must not have been an easy task.
The Hingham High boys hockey team had plenty of worthy candidates.
One was junior goaltender Mike Karo, but any one of Hingham's nine goal-scorers throughout the three-game tournament likely received consideration.
Clutch gene must have been the determining factor.
FALMOUTH — Winning big games in the Buddy Ferreira Classic is nothing new for the Hingham boys’ hockey team.
Capturing the championship against its longtime foe BC High, however, was a first for the seventh-ranked Harbormen, who came from behind to topple the fourth-ranked Eagles Wednesday night, 3-1, skating away with their third title at Falmouth Ice Arena to close the regular season on a four-game win streak.
FALMOUTH – Boxing legend Mike Tyson famously said, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.”
But the Hingham boys hockey team punched back this time.
Trailing 1-0 and yielding an 18-9 shot-on-goal disadvantage, the Harbormen rallied with three unanswered goals for a 3-1 victory over BC High to take the 29h annual Buddy Ferreira Classic tournament title for the third time in school history at Falmouth Ice Arena.
Needing a scorer to step up this season and lead the offense, Hingham High boys hockey has found what they were searching for in junior right wing Cam McKenna. McKenna’s 21 goals and 10 assists this season have helped the Harbormen secure a record of 14-4-2 with two games left to play in the Buddy Ferreira Classic Tournament.
BRIGHTON – Arlington boys hockey head coach John Messuri can’t emphasize enough the difficulty of its current stretch on the schedule, facing Catholic school powers and other tough nonleague foes before getting into the thick of the Middlesex League Liberty race.
CANTON — Great teams just find a way to win.
That’s at least what Hingham boys hockey head coach Tony Messina told his players in their locker room Sunday night at Canton Ice House, after the No. 1 Harbormen (4-0) had to rally twice and hold off a late charge from No. 15 Archbishop Williams to secure a 6-5 win in the Arrow Sports Group Holiday Classic championship game.
